Renting a Car for Drake Bay: What You Need to Know

Planning a trip to Drake Bay via boat? Here's the smartest way to handle your rental car without wasting money or time.

One-Way Rentals Are the Way to Go

The best strategy is to arrange a one-way rental with a company like Alamo or Solid Car Rental. Instead of leaving your car parked (and unused) in Sierpe while you explore Drake Bay, you can have the rental company drop off or pick up your car in Sierpe. That way, you're not paying for parking ($6+ per day) and a rental you’re not using. Alamo and Solid have offices in Uvita and they send a staff member to pickup/drop off the car for a reasonable fee.

Combine With Osa Private Transport

After your boat ride, book a shuttle with Osa Private Transport to your next destination. It’s a seamless way to continue your adventure without the hassle of retrieving a parked car. Pro tip: plan your Osa Peninsula visit at the start or end of your trip—it’ll save on logistics and make the most of your time.

Don’t Drive to Drake Bay

Driving all the way to Drake Bay is not recommended. The roads are remote, rough, and often require river crossings that can be dangerous or impassable during rainy season. It is common to get stuck, or stuck behind someone else who is stuck. Most travelers find it stressful, slow, and not worth the risk—especially when the scenic boat ride from Sierpe is safer, more enjoyable, and much easier on your vehicle. Most rental car insurance DOES NOT cover any damage incurred in Drake Bay because damage is so common there.

Book Early, Especially in High Season

You cannot arrange one-way rentals online—you must call or visit the agency in person. Also, don’t wait until the last minute: rental cars sell out fast in peak season, and so do shuttles. Book both well in advance. For Peak season (December- January) you should have hotel, tours, boat, and shuttles booked at least 6 months in advance.

Never purchase rental car insurance online—it’s not valid in Costa Rica. You’ll still be required to pay for local insurance at the rental desk, often at a much higher cost than expected.
